Insurance: Am I Getting the Right Benefits?
There are all types of health insurance coverage and
a variety of different plans to choose from. But where you will
really see the effects of your specific insurance plan, is in the
benefits it offers.
So it’s important to know what benefits are
available. If you’re shopping around for a health insurance
plan or reevaluating the one you already have, ask yourself if you
are getting a good deal or not. Do you have the following benefits?
If not, what would you do in the event you needed them?
Surgical benefits
This means that you will be reimbursed for operations,
with the exception that there will still be fees you have to deal
with. If you have a pricier insurance policy, you will likely have
more surgical benefits than if you have a cheaper policy.
Hospitalization benefits
Bills for daily room and board, nurse care, and things
like x-rays and medicines that tend to accompany a hospital stay,
will be taken care of if you have hospitalization benefits. Sometimes
your health insurance provider will give the hospital an allowance
to work with or it might pick up the tab later, no questions asked.
This is one of the most common kinds of benefits offered.
Basic medicine benefits
Doctor visits and other general expenses like this
are covered with these benefits – which vary wildly from policy
to policy.
Major medicine benefits
If you are unexpectedly involved in a horrible accident
or are suffering from a serious illness, this is where these benefits
come into play. Hospital bills will never get too overwhelming if
you have the benefits of major medicine. However, the insured will
have to pay part of the overall bill, even if it’s higher
than the deductible.
Comprehensive benefits
If you want to have all the benefits already listed
here covered in your plan – surgical, hospitalization, basic
and major medicine – then you will need a comprehensive plan,
the whole kit and caboodle. However, there are often co-payments
and deductibles you will still have to take care of yourself.
Income and disability benefits
In the case that you cannot work due to a sickness
or accident, you can benefit from income and disability benefits,
which usually mean that you will get a percentage of your wages
for a set period of time up to a whole lifetime. These kinds of
benefits are old hat in the insurance business but there are many
different factors that affect the extent of the benefits that are
offered to each individual person.
There are several other benefits besides these most
basic ones, and they include care for mental health problems, drug
addiction, alcoholism, long-term care for diseases and other chronic
conditions, family planning, physical therapy, and much more.
The different types of health insurance will offer
one or more of these benefits and obviously, the more they offer,
the better. Pay for as comprehensive a plan as you can afford. While
it may be intimidating to have to deal with the financial burden
of health insurance premiums, it will likely end up saving you a
lot of money and headache down the road.
